Are you a REAL St. Louis Cardinals’ FAN???

After being swept in two consecutive series by the Brewers first and then the Nationals, some Cardinals’ fans may be questioning our team – Not me! First of all, I am a lifetime Cardinals’ fan, and losing or playing poorly may cause me some discomfort but in no way really affects my love for the Redbirds. After being a Cardinals’ faithful for over 63 years, I have seen winning and losing streaks come and go.

During tonight’s’ defeat at the hands of Danny Espinoza, I did see several things that give me cause for renewed hope in the midst of this current losing streak:

1) Matt Holliday is BACK, and with him hitting 4th, Albert will definitely get more pitches to hit – and to drive!

2) Albert is definitely seeing the ball better and hitting the ball with authority to all fields, much more consistently than earlier this season – more like the Albert we all know and love!

3) We stayed in the game until the very end, with the help of come from behind homers from Albert and Yadi,

4) FINALLY, this road trip is over, and we head back to Busch Stadium and the GREATEST fans in the world!

5) Chris Carpenter is on the hill tomorrow night against the Royals, and Carp has always been the man we go to when we need to turn things around!

WOW, it is EXTREMELY AWESOME to follow a team with as much history and talent as my beloved Cardinals!!!!!

Nothing better than a Pitching Duel

Some people like to see a game where runs are scored every inning, everyone in the lineup has at least two hits, and the winning team is the one who gets to bat last. My favorite game is one in which every batter up has the potential to provide the game winning hit. The game tonight wtih the Blue Jays was my kind of game. Especially since my team won!

The two starting pitchers took different routes, but they both reached the same destination at the end of eight innings – no runs allowed. Ricky Romero of the Jays scattered 8 hits over the 8 innings, with Albert Pujols garnering half of them, but he held the Redbirds scoreless by causing them to strand 11. Cards co-ace Chris Carpenter was much more dominant, only allowing 4 hits to Toronto. His teammates rewarded his good effort by coming up with 3 singles in the top of the 9th off the Jays closer, Kevin Gregg, with the game winner being provided by the Cards hottest hitter, Matt Holliday, who has certainly gone from goat to Hero over the last several games.

The thing that attracts me to scoreless games is that tension that is created each time a batter comes to the plate, especially late in the contest, knowing that one swing of the bat can totally affect the outcome. I think this type of game had to be the origin of the ABC Wide World of Sports slogan -” The thrill of victory or the Agony of Defeat” – since the winning team has the Thrill, while the losing team gets the Agony.

Thank Goodness for an “Off Day”

I really believe that I need an off day to recuperate from the late hours required to watch the Cardinals play on the West Coast, and although I did go to bed at my normal time last night (which did help, by the way), I think the day off today may do wonders for the Redbird players – Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday, who have been in slumps recentlly, and to help completely heal Colby Rasmus and David Freese and get their bats and gloves bat in the regular lineup.

Verse 5, “My Friend Stan’s a Cardinal”

My friend Mark’s a Cardinal
Big Mac is his name
One of the most awesome sluggers
To ever play the game
He hits the ball majestically
Knocks it half a mile
On your face he puts a grin
Then turns it to a smile
And some day, ay, ay
When I get on track
I’m gonna be a Cardinal
Just like my friend Mac

See you in Phoenix tomorrow night when our rookie lefty, Jaime Garcia (5-2,1.47)  faces Diamondbacks RHP Rodrigo Lopez (2-4, 4.27) – first pitch is scheduled for 8:40 p.m. CDT.
Be there early for batting practice – we need it…
